How to get closer to God | Daily Habits

Hey everyone 🙂 today I am going to be talking about a couple of ways that you can get closer to God. I also thought that it would be cool if you shared some of your ideas with me of how you get closer to God as well because I would love to hear them! Anyways, don’t forget to subscribe and enjoy!

Spend Time With Him

So, one of the main things you can do is spend time with him. Just imagine that he is your friend (which he is), you would obviously dedicate time to spend with them. If you don’t spend time with them and talk to them how can your relationship grow? Here are some of the different ways you can spend time with him.

pray

The first thing you can do to get close to God is to pray. Something I like to do is kneel down and just pray about how I am feeling and act like I am talking to a friend because it really helps me to imagine it that way. Dedicate certain time out of your day in order to pray, but also pray small little prayers through out the day. Always make sure you turn to God first with any problems by praying and talking to him.

quiet time

I don’t know about you, but I don’t have much quiet time. I always like to have music playing, a tv show or movie or something else, but it is important to have quiet time where you can just exist and feel. I know that sounds kind of strange, but it is a refreshing feeling. Take some time to stretch, do yoga, go on a quiet walk, or meditate but try to open your mind. Say a prayer telling God you are listening. I am sure you are thinking that this one sounds stupid, but honestly it works.

read the Bible

Something else to do daily is to read your Bible. I like to read mine every night before bed. I only read a page because I know I will tune out after that, but even just that works for me. Reading the Bible is reading the word of God which will help you get closer to him. Also, saying a prayer that he will let you understand the word and help it get through to you is another great idea.

worship music

This one is super easy to do. If you are a busy person, listen to worship music while you drive, clean, answer emails, etc. There are some really great and inspiring songs out there that will help you realize certain things about your faith and God. I like to go onto the Top Christian playlist on Spotify because normally there are some really good songs on there.

Bible study

Lastly, studying the word of God is super important. The Bible can be pretty confusing at times, so taking the time to study and understand it is vital. There are a lot of methods to study the Bible, but I use the soap one. I follow any Bible study that I can find and then write down my favorite verse out of the section they say to read. Then I will write out any observations I have from reading it. It also helps to look up an explanation and commentary online to help you understand it.

meditate

Meditation is a great way to calm your mind and invite God into your thoughts. Take a couple of minutes out of your day to just meditate on a verse or idea in the Bible or just enjoy the moment of peace where God can just speak with you.

analyze other time

Make sure that you are spending the rest of your time wisely. I recently started analyzing how I spend my time and I am kind of embarrassed. I will watch YouTube so much while I am doing everything, so instead of doing that I will be listening to music or a podcast that is good for me to listen to. Also, realize what you are spending most of your time on. Are you on social media a lot? Because if you are, should you be spending more time on Instagram instead of building and bettering your relationship with God. Here is a short list of things that you can do instead of that:

  • read (Christian books are a good idea)
  • listen to music
  • write
  • talk to people
  • podcast
  • exercise
  • go on a walk

Obey Him

Obeying the Lord is so important in making you feel close to him. If you are disobeying him, it will feel like you are getting farther and farther away from him. This is something that I am definitely working on, but I am seeing progress which is encouraging. There are a lot of simple things you can do, like listening to his commandments and applying what you learn through studying the Bible. Several things that you can work on are, not cussing, don’t listen or watch “bad or inappropriate things”, don’t say “Oh my God!”, and don’t gossip. Those are a few things that you can do, but also work on doing the good things that we should, like being patient, kind, etc.

Also, remember that he does communicate with you whether it is directly or indirectly through a feeling or thought. Make sure you listen to that. This can be hard for some people, including me, but I can tell you that the result of me doing this a couple of times has been life changing. He can also call you to do certain things which might not be according to your plans, but his. And remember, he knows far better than you do.

Other Things

I am sure there are so many things that I haven’t mentioned, but I would like to mention a few other things that help me feel closer to God. These are also things that I am working on doing and some goals that I have.

memorize verses

Memorizing verses is something that I want to start doing. I feel like it is such a cool thing to have little pieces of the Bible memorized. I will start by finding some verses that I really love and memorizing those ones. So, find your favorite verse and start to memorize that.

trust

Something that is pretty hard for me is to trust the Lord. When you trust the Lord, you trust his plan and timing that means you don’t worry. This can be difficult just to not worry, but remind yourself that the Lord is watching over you.

write

Writing also helps me so much. I know feelings can get overwhelming and it can be hard to trust God, but writing things down helps put things into perspective. Also, writing down prayers helps to kind of finalize them. I like to write in a diary, separate from my Bible study.

talk with others

Something that is kind of uncomfortable for me to do is talk with others about my faith and about God. I don’t really know why it is hard for me to do, but I am working on it. Make sure to surround yourself with people that you can talk to and believe the same things you do. Also, going to a Bible study or something similar like a small group is also super helpful. Sometimes getting the point of view of others and hearing their stories can be very helpful in growing your faith.

routine

Like I kind of mentioned above, make sure to schedule time that you dedicate to worship or studying the Bible. Schedule this time into your routine so that you do it daily. For example, make sure it’s part of your morning routine to pray, or study the Bible or listen to worship music.

church

Lastly, this might seem obvious, but go to church. There is something special about going to a community of Christians and praising God. There are so many times when I am feeling bad but church helps me so much.
