5 Things to do When You Feel Far From God

Hey guys ๐Ÿ™‚ I wanted to write this post to those of you who may feel far from God. You should know that every Christian goes through periods like that. So hopefully this post and God’s word can help you grow closer to God again.

I want you all to know that the you being here and reading this sentence means that God is working in your heart. He hasn’t abandoned you and He never will. God never moves away from us, it is always us moving away from Him, even if we don’t realize it. Also, remember that our feelings aren’t the truth, God’s Word is. Our feelings can deceive us at times, so don’t lose hope because God is reaching out to you in this moment.


The first thing that you should do is pray. God is the solution to any problem, so turn to Him and pour out your heart. Praying and talking to God like He is a close friend (because He is!) will help you to feel that intimate relationship with Him. I have found that journaling my prayers is really helpful. Not only does it let me take my time and think about what I am praying, but I can also look back on my prayers and see how much God has worked in my life. I think we all have the tendency to forget how God has already blessed us with, so take a little time to reflect on that and be thankful.


As I mentioned earlier, usually there is something that can be making us feel far from God. This can be things like homework, new friends, poor time management, our family, work, sin, etc. If it is something that you can easily fix, then great! Sometimes we can change our schedule or just realize that there is a problem, but other times it is more difficult. If you are struggling with sin and you feel far from God, think of it like this: you need the doctor most when you are sick. You shouldn’t run away from God when you are in need of His love and care. He doesn’t hate you when you sin, He wants you to turn back to Him. Take a little time to reflect (maybe in prayer) and ask God to reveal why you feel far from Him. A while ago I was dealing with some extreme anxiety that made me feel far from God, after dealing with the problem and realizing that other things were keeping me from Him, I now feel so much closer to Him! James 1:2-4 says, “โ€œCount it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.โ€ So just know that at the end of this, you will feel a stronger connection with the Lord.


You all probably expected to see this one, but read God’s word! If you don’t usually read your Bible, start by reading a daily devotional or Bible study. I really love New Morning Mercies by Paul David Tripp. Start small and work your way up, but try to read your Bible daily. If you already read your Bible daily, try incorporating something new or spending more time in the Word. I always like to change things up, whether that means starting a new Bible study or just simply reading about a different subject. Something that helps me feel closer to God is using a Biblical commentary to help me understand what I am reading (Enduring Word is my favorite). Like I’ve already said, the important thing is to combat your own thoughts and feelings with God’s word. That is The Truth that we should be following and filling our minds with.


Spending time in pure silence can actually be really helpful when you feel far from God. Sometimes I feel like even TV or music keeps me from God because I am not giving Him time to speak in my life. Creating your own quiet time routine helps you to regularly devote time to God. It’s really up to you and your schedule, but I recommend reading your Bible, praying and then spend 5 or more minutes to just let God speak to you. A lot of times silencing the other loud voices in our lives, even if it is for a few minutes each day, allows God to whisper what He has been waiting to tell us. Adding this 10 or 15 minute time into your routine can change your life for the better. Wake up 10 minutes earlier than usual or stay up for 10 minutes longer. However you fit it into your schedule, make sure to schedule this time and dedicate it to God. Even if you don’t “feel” like it, push yourself to do it!


Lastly, try your hardest to live in God’s light. Not only does this mean to read and pray, but also remember that we are called to live different. Jesus has changed our lives and we should be living like it. Don’t just go through the motions of being a “Christian”, but truly live for and with God. We should be obeying what God commands us to do in the Bible and also what God speaks to our hearts. When we live in God’s light, we also shine light to others. Sometimes I feel like I am living in the world, meaning that I find happiness, peace and joy in superficial things or really anything that isn’t God. Really, we should be finding our happiness in God! God never changes and will never fail us, so always look to Him.
